To begin with, we want to tell you how important it is that both the dog and the owner learn that coatcare can be a moment of joy.
Be relaxed and be in a position that feels good. How it looks is personal, if you want to sit in the sofa, have the dog on a table and so on...
Don't forget that the dog can feel whether you are relaxed or not. Don't brush the dog if you feel stressed, the dog will feel that and will get worried and might refuse to cooperate. Don't be in a hurry. If you do it right it will be a joyful moment for both dog and owner.
We recommend that you just let the dog get used to the brush. So only brush short moments at a time, from 1-5 minutes, and don't forget to give the dog lot's of praise afterwards. Make your dog real happy afterwards and tell it how good it is.
Then you can brush for longer and longer time until the dog knows that coatcare is something nice, safe and that he will be praised afterwards.
We noticed that you can get a better relation with a dog who has a long coat than a shortcoated dog because of the time you spend with it when you brush.
THE PUPPY
During the puppyperiod you can brush the puppy sometimes so it will get used to it and think it's nice.
COMBS AND BRUSHES
Don't buy the cheapest brushes and combs. It can complicate and just get more expensive. Talk with the breeder about what you should use. They have experience.
SHAMPOO/HAIR CONDITIONER
It's necessary to have a really good shampoo and hair conditioner. It's important that you have the right products for your own dog. Just like us they have different hair types. Your dog's breeder is even here, a good source to get advice on which products to use. Human shampoo can give your dog allergy.
THE JUNIORPERIOD IS THE WORST TIME
During this time we recommend that you wash your dog once a week and brush every day. The tangles will suddenly come out of nowhere...
Don't forget that it will be easier when the coat has grown longer.
If you think that it will be easier if you cut the coat and then let it grow you should know that it will be the same job as if you don't cut. Have patience and look forward!
THE GROWN UP DOG
In most cases you wash the dog each third week or for some dogs five weeks between the baths. But it's different from dog to dog, it depends on what hairtype the dog has.
WEATHER
The weather will affect the coat. During periods when it's damp outside it can bring more tangles.
DIRT EFFECTS THE DOG
A simple rule: The dirtier dog the more tangles!
Good luck and we hope that you enjoy coatcare as much as we do!
